Step by step
How to Calculate Weighted GPA
Four steps, one formula. Here's how to work out your weighted GPA by hand.
Step 1: Turn grades into points
Use the 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0. See the full weighted GPA scale.
Step 2: Add the class bonus
Add +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB. Failing grades never get a bonus.
Step 3: Multiply by credits
A full-year class is usually 1 credit and a semester class 0.5. Multiply each class's points by its credits.
Step 4: Divide by total credits
Add up all the results and divide by your total credits.
Weighted GPA = Σ (grade points + bonus) × credits ÷ Σ credits
Worked example
| Class | Grade | Points | Credits | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AP Calculus | B | 3.0 + 1.0 = 4.0 | 1 | 4.0 |
| Honors English | A | 4.0 + 0.5 = 4.5 | 1 | 4.5 |
| Biology | B+ | 3.3 | 1 | 3.3 |
| Health | A | 4.0 | 0.5 | 2.0 |
Total points: 4.0 + 4.5 + 3.3 + 2.0 = 13.8. Total credits: 3.5. Weighted GPA = 13.8 ÷ 3.5 = 3.94.
Schools use slightly different scales, so check your handbook — or let the calculator do it.

+Do I include classes I failed?
Yes. An F counts as 0 points and gets no Honors or AP bonus. It still adds to your total credits.
+Do pass/fail classes count?
Usually not. Pass/fail classes earn credit but don't affect GPA at most schools.
+What if my classes have different credits?
Multiply each class's points by its credits before adding, then divide by total credits instead of the number of classes.
